Bengaluru, Mar 17: The ruling BJP in Karnataka has prevailed upon M Krishna Reddy, who got elected as Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly during the Congress-JD(S) coalition rule, to resign his post.
Faced with the threat of a no-confidence motion against him by the BJP members, Reddy tendered his resignation instead of facing the ignominy of being unseated through the no-confidence motion.
Assembly Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri has accepted his resignation and announced the same in the Assembly on Tuesday.
Reddy was elected to the Assembly from the Chintamani constituency in Chickballapur district on JD(S) ticket.
Krishna Reddy was unanimously elected Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in 2018 soon after the formation of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in the State headed by H D Kumaraswamy.
K R Ramesh Kumar, who too was elected unanimously as the Speaker during the coalition government, quit the office soon after the BJP government came to power with B S Yediyurappa as the Chief Minister last year.
Kageri told the Legislative Assembly that Reddy had resigned from the post of the Deputy Speaker and he had accepted the resignation.
Following the resignation, Kageri said the question of moving the no confidence motion does not arise. The ruling BJP would fill the vacancy soon.
Informed sources in the BJP indicated Anand Mamani, representing Saundatti constituency in Belagavi district, is likely to be nominated to the post.
