French nun Jeanne Jugan from the congregation was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican on October 11. The year-long celebration of the canonization was kicked off with the archbishop Bernard Moras presiding over the public function and holy mass at St Joseph’s Auditorium here on Wednesday November 4. Over 1,000 people attended the function. Anglo Indian MLA Derrick Fullinfaw and former IGP FTR Colaco among others were present.
"In today’s world, there is increased negligence of the sick and the old and therefore it is noteworthy that the Pope has canonized Jeanne Jugan for her compassionate love for the sick and the poor. The work of the sisters across the world, and in our very own city at the homes for the aged, cannot go unnoticed", he said. "Our country has a rich heritage of respectful relationships between the young and the old, I hope and pray, we retain this heritage of respect for elders," he added. He invited the gathering to spread the message of compassionate care for the sick, the old and the dying.
