Udupi, Nov 4: An apparently inexperienced thief was found hiding in a corner of the strong room of Vijaya Bank, K M Marg Branch here, when the bank officials opened the doors of the bank on the morning of Tuesday November 3.
The thief has been identified as Rishikesh (28) from Ambalpady in the city. He was a technician of air conditioners by profession, and had visited the bank during the day on Monday. It is said that the thief entered the strong room after repairing the air conditioner, unnoticed by the people.
As usual, the bank officials locked the strong room door before closing the branch for the day in the evening. In the meantime, the accused reportedly took a sum of Rs 85,000 from the cash found inside the strong room and waited inside, as there was no way he could come out. On Tuesday morning, the bank officials found a shortage of Rs 85,000 in the cash position and started searching. They then found the thief hiding in a corner of the strong room.
The accused was handed over to the policemen. Reportedly, this was the first time Rishikesh attempted theft. A case has been registered in the town police station here.
