Kundapur, Feb 23: "Education is not only to secure a job. Education is important to acquire knowledge, values of life and growth of the culture. There is a need to give more stress on educating girls," opined Byndoor MLA Sukumar Shetty.
Sukumar Shetty was speaking after inaugurating the 14th annual day celebration of D Devraj Urs post-matric hostel for boys of backward communities on Saturday, February 22 in the city.
MLA Shetty further said, "Nearly 35,000 students graduate every year in the city of Udupi. But they do not get placements. But it is heartening to note that the youths of Kundapur are getting into various industries including hotel and fishing. It is possible to develop values of discipline and patience in students from hostels like this."
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rekha Bannadi, HOD of Kannada, Bhandarkar's College Kundapur said, "Students who live in hostels have more knowledge about life than those who come from their homes. Hostel life teaches discipline. Education is not only to secure marks but also to develop the skills each individual has."
Cook Shekhar Poojary of the hostel and warden B S Madara were felicitated on the occasion. Prizes were distributed to students who have secured highest marks in studies and also to those who have excelled in sports.
President of Kundapur taluk social justice committee Roopa Pai presided over the function. Zilla Panchayat member Srilatha Suresh Shetty, district officer of backward welfare department Dayananda P, Kundapur SI Harish, principal of Koteshwara first grade college Dr Rajendra S Nayak, member of town municipality V Prabhakar, Giridhar Ganiga and others were present.
Student of the hostel Ashwath welcomed the gathering. Sushant introduced the guests to the audience.
