Oct 28, 2009: K R Kamath, presentlty functioning as the chairman and managing director of Allahabad Bank, has been appointed as the chairman and managing director of the largest nationalized bank, Punjab National Bank(PNB). With this elevation, he has achieved the rare distinction of being the youngest managing director of the largest bank. He is scheduled to take over reins of PNB on Wednesday October 28.
Kasargod Ramachandra Kamath, born on November 19, 1955, got his preliminary education in Madonna Convent in Kasargod and completed high school education in BEM High School Kasargod. After passing his B Com degree examination from Bhandarkars College Kundapur in 1976 with sixth rank in Mysore University, he joined Corporation Bank as officer trainee in 1977.
In recognition of his meritorious service while serving Corporation Bank, towards achieving 100% computerization, building of a strong marketting team etc., he was made the executive director of Bank of India on May 19, 2009 by the central government. In addition to being the executive director of Bank of India, he simultaneously worked as a nominated director in several other concerns.
On August 2, 2008, he took over as the chairman and managing director of Allahabad Bank. During his stewardship, the bank crossed several milestones.
