Mangaluru, Feb 14: A career guidance programme on 'Higher education and career opportunities in Life Sciences' was organized by the department of Zoology, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) on February 12 at L F Rasquinha hall, LCRI block of the campus.
This programme was sponsored by Star College Scheme, department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
The chief guest for the programme was Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, vice-chancellor, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University (deemed to be university), Chennai, who spoke on the topic ‘Interdisciplinary career opportunities', where he emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approach for a better career opportunity in the present scenario. He also motivated students to be different in whatever they do, need for critical thinking and to take on risk to achieve greater heights.
Prof K R S Sambasiva Rao, vice-chancellor of Mizoram University, spoke on the topic ‘Overseas career opportunities in Life Sciences’ where he stressed on the need for practical knowledge and experiential learning for a better overseas career opportunity. He also gave insights about various competitive exams and scholarships available to perceive higher education abroad and to find a better career opportunity.
Prof V Rajendran, principal, Dr N G P Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore shared information on various ‘Career Prospects in India’. He spoke on various types of professional courses available in India. He also introduced the students to various research institutes, fellowships and funding agencies available for obtaining research grants.
The programme was presided over by Fr Dr Praveen Martis S J, principal, St Aloysius College. Dr Hemachandra (HOD, department of Zoology), the convenor of the programme welcomed the gathering and Dr Adarsha Gowda M H, organizing secretary proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Ronald Nazareth, convenor, Star College scheme was also present during the programme.
Over 400 students participated in the career guidance programme. Students of St Aloysius College (Mangaluru), NUCSER (Paneer campus, Mangaluru), Canara College (Mangaluru), Government First Grade College (Mangaluru), Vivekananda College (Puttur), St Philomena College (Puttur), SVS College (Bantwal) and St Aloysius PU College (Mangaluru) were the beneficiaries of this programme.
