Mangaluru: Tanker rams into bike in Nanthoor - 20-year-old rider killed on spot

Mangaluru, Feb 13: A youngster died on spot after a tanker banged into his bike here at Nanthoor on Thursday, February 13.

The deceased has been identified as Karthik Mallya (20). He was a student of Besant College and a resident of Mannagudda.

He was on his way from Surathkal towards Nanthoor when a tanker rammed into his two-wheeler in the rear. Karthik was flung to the road killing him on the spot.

Kadri police station registered a case.

    A bridge is not even the right solution. A roundabout is always a cause for bottlenecks, and this is a basic civil engineering knowledge. How can such a big entry point into the city have a roundabout with 4 policemen controlling traffic. One cannot even see them sometimes as they do not even wear warning jackets and under the white backdrop of cars and buses it is impossible to see them. We are still running on british invented techniques. Any sensible person in charge of the traffic situation will know that a signal system is required here and the roundabout has to be eliminated. Or perhaps a bridge with a signal. Along with safe bridges for the public to cross the road. The quality of the roads at this exact junction is also pathetic. I wonder how many more people have to die to knock some sense into the leaders.

    The road I mean the highway from Kulur to Pumpwell is a killer road. We had young beautician who met with a accident near Kuntikan. A few days back there was a lady who was knocked down by an ambulance, we had unfortunate death at the Pumpwell flyover and now this one at Nanthoor. So we now know how safe this road is. What are the authorities doing? Heavy vechiles should have a separate lane, buses and trucks should be on the outer lane .

    If the motive to comment is to play the blaming game..its a shame for all of us.
    Both cong and BJP have ruled both the state and the Corporation.

    The solution is only a flyover or a bypass.

    The present nantoor junction is basically a wrong design. We are going to see many more deaths on this road,if the road design is not changed.

    I have said before and I will say again (if the comment is published!):

    Giving a license to an under-25 is problematic.

    Young people have little or no road awareness, and get into many accidents...

    ...around the world.

    It is easy to blame other vehicles , roads and fly-overs. The core problem is a young driver.

    Merely hitting from behind does not establish that the vehicle at the rear was at ENTIRE fault.

    If the vehicle-driver in front is aware enough he would notice that the vehicle behind is tailgating, and would take appropriate defensive action BEFORE it is too late.

    Equally importantly, an aware driver takes 360 degree precautions, including watching the behaviour of the drivers around him.

    An under-25 driver is usually NEVER aware of the next move of other drivers around him.

    So you are implying that the tanker driver should not have kept distance from the rear of the bike.

    Remember the Motor vehicle regulations of how much distance should be maintained from the rear of the front vehicle. It is always the fault of the person hitting from behind.

    We need to educate our children in schools for Road safety , driving ,as they are India's future .RTO needs to be stricter for getting safety videos for Drivers on Roads .

    I agree with you Mangalorean....your comment, like in the past... is an eye opener as well as I can say as Reminder to all..

    What Mr. Ravi says also is agreeable. But, I suggest and request to parents not to give two wheelers in the hands of students till they get matured and start earning of their own. How much you advise also or give classes that's just for the time being. Once, bike is in their hands, they get excited and start experimenting and experiencing by going speed....when a person dies in accident, he is lifeless but the parents drown in pain life long....     Same is the case with NH 66, Kasaragod to Mangalore. I don't know when the road will be doubled. It is the same road (not widened) since my childhood, 40 years. Many accidents and deaths but the administration does not care.

    Traffic management at Nanthoor and KPT junction is very bad. Something needs to be done urgently to fix the problem!

    All yellow board vehicles must be fitted with Speed governor as instructed by Govt. But do all these heavy vehicles have this instrument fitted? Concerned authorities, please wake up !

    People are over-speeding on road as if they were not late in their life time!
    We can't blame Policemen for all these ! Because in front of Police van /vehicle, people go in the speed specified but once they cross that vicinity, then the WORLD IS THEIRS!!!
    I was witnessing an incident which occurred yesterday at PVS junction. A female student ( college ) was slowly moving ahead even though the traffic light is RED and in the presence of a Traffic Policeman; She was not only posing threat to herself but also to others who are coming from opposite side! Policeman stopped her and asked to move back.

    The Nanthoot junction is mayhem and havoc ..the entire area is unplanned ..smooth and safe ride in entire mangalore is not possible ..
    BJP nor the congress fight for these real issues which impact daily lives of people ..
    We are somehow eye washed and hood winked by these politicians ..day and night and we fall easy prey

    System has failed us again and again ..no pt in blaming the system or just dont keep hopes ...u feel we as citizens should look out for eachother ..v should take responsibility to drivr safe and let oyhers be safe too...there have been fatal accident s at kpt nanthoor but wat did govt do?? follow rules use indicators drive at minimum speed lmits by this why u can look after ur fellow citizens...

    We have to blame our Police Traffic department, because it is the duty of that department to ser the safety of vehicles . I have repeated many times that our circles are worst . Matainence of road is very poor. Our MCC still not able to appoint Mayor and oath taking has not done .... how can they maintain our roads.?????
    Our Traffic department will open their eyes only after so many accidents.

    These kind of accidents occur almost every week if not oftener. It is time that these tankers and lorries are fitted with speed governors.

    A young life is gone. What a sad shock to the parents. I join several others in offering condolences to the mother, father and other close relatives of the deceased young boy.

    I was there minutes after the accident took place. I couldn't bear the blood and body just laying there. But what i understood was, An accident can take place even at a safe side of the road. It just proves how no one is safe on the road. RIP!

    Nanthoor circle there is no speed breakers or barricade. People are very very careless. Traffic police cannot control traffic properly. This is 2nd accident within week.

    Nanthoor is a very dangerous junction that needs to be modified properly. So many accidents happen here. No matter how safe one is, if the road itself is dangerous, then therw needs to be serious examination into the design of the junction.
