Udupi, Feb 12: Villagers of Baikady and Harady village panchayat, Civil Committee, Krishika Sangha members including panchayat members staged hunger protest in front of Harady Panchayat, opposing the setting up of Material Recovery Facility (MRF), wastage management in 5.64 acres of government land on Wednesday, February 12.

Kumar Suvarna vice-president, Harady village panchayat said, We were trying to make them understand the adverse effect of wastage unit. It is a government scheme but no one collected public opinion. A tender has been approved to a private company. We are suspicious that there is a conspiracy behind this act. The contract should be given to Nirmithi Kendra. The proposed scheme harms the democratic system. District administration is preparing to set up MRF by violating all norms. No decision was taken at the panchayat meeting."

"Nitte villagers have opposed this project. Why do we need this unit here? Do not try to fool the villagers. It is a residential area. After issuing the NOC by CEO of Zilla panchayat, they have called a consultancy meeting. This meeting is supposed to be called in the beginning. The project details are not mentioned in the agenda. The project needs to be rejected for the benefit of the public of Baikady. The project showcases the dishonest functioning of the district authority and political representatives," he added.

"Construction work has been given to a private company without calling tender. What is the purpose behind it? People are suspecting these antics," said Kumar.

Ephrem Lobo one of the villagers said, "All officials are involved in this conspiracy. Village level and ward level meeting was held in December but the project was not discussed. We have put forth an objection on January 1 but that was ineffective. The officials lied claiming that the public did not object. Rs 2 crore was sanctioned for irrigation and drainage work. Public notice process is not done. It is an illegal act. If they do not withdraw NOC, we will continue with our hunger strike till our last breath in this very place."

Villagers of Baikady and Harady panchayat members have opposed the project and voiced against district administration.
