8,500 trees to be sacrificed to decongest traffic in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Over 8,500 trees will likely be axed by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) to decongest traffic in the tech corridor in the city. The move has irked the environmentalists who are criticizing the KRDCL.

Campaigning organisation Jhatkaa.org has collected more than 2,500 signatures demanding an immediate stay on felling of trees, some of which are as old as 80 years. The organisation has also called for proper and accessible public consultation to be held for all projects.

The KRDCL plans to convert the existing two-lane and four-lane roads into four-lane and six-lane roads respectively along the stretch between Bannerghatta, Sarjapura, Mandur, Anekal and Whitefield. However, the environmentalists stress that the spike in the levels of air pollution in Bengaluru is due to the mass razing of trees for new infrastructural projects.

“In just the past couple of years, air pollution has risen drastically in Bengaluru, with construction dust, garbage burning and the rise in private vehicles leading to more emissions. In the midst of this, the city's old trees are a natural buffer and their loss for development projects will lead to worsening impact of climate change, not to mention the health effects of air pollution,” the petition reads.

    Nobody cared when they cut so many trees on western Ghats.. Why they care about this.. Coz they can see these trees and stand under it. Or park their vehicle in shade.. That's all they need the tree for...

    Instead make rule like delhi.. Odd n even traffic.. Let people take public transport.. Let companies give work from home options..

    Best is.. Develop other city as well... Not just Bangalore.
    You want all IT companies to be here.. Wr will people stay.. Outskirts of Bangalore
    If other cities given equal opportunity.. Then for sure ull not have this
    But they want easy options.

    Dont cut trees. cut population growth . pollution gets reduced. this is very simple. every new born is a contributory to carbon emission.

    Lets see. Trees are a natural buffer and remedy to air pollution. Already one in eight deaths in India may be attributed to air pollution. Cutting down more trees may lead to increased air pollution. Uncontrolled cutting down of trees in large urban areas also leads to a syndrome called the "Heat Island Effect". An abundance of plants and trees tend to have a cooling effect in these urban areas. The "Heat Island Effect" tends to greatly increase urban temperatures and stifle wind flow . The increased heat within the urban areas tend to divert approaching rain and thunderstorms away from the circumference of large urban areas . The increased urban air temperatures tend trap and keep a tighter stranglehold of the atmospheric moisture molecules and water that might otherwise fall to the earth as beneficial rain. Interrupting or cutting off the natural wind flow across urban areas may also tend to prevent the mixing of the atmosphere which is essential for cooling and the development and movement of rain systems.

    In the name of development no trees will b left. Always during such project government will claim they will plant trees but these words r just to fool people no serious effort will b made to plant trees good example is the 4 lane highway in Mangalore. I don't what will b left for the next generation to breathe.

    In India development means: cutting off lung space by chopping off trees, encroaching government land, forests, and water bodies, disposing sewage and industrial waste to river, sea etc.
    I went to Delhi last month and could not even breathe that polluted air....
