Kasargod, Feb 5: Custom officials seized gold worth Rs 6.2 crore being illegally transported in a car on Tuesday, February 4. Two men who hail from Maharashtra were also arrested.
The car was stopped near Bekal Pallikere toll booth by Kannur-Kasargod custom officials, after a tip-off that gold was being transported illegally from Kannur.
When the police stopped the car bearing Maharashtra registration number, the two youth identified as Khetan (29) and Akash (23) tried to flee.
Upon careful inspection, gold billets weighing 15.5 kilograms were recovered. Holes were drilled in the front and rear car seats and gold was carefully hidden in the cushioning. The arrested suspects confessed that the gold was being transported from Thalassery to Maharashtra. The custom officials are investigating to find others involved in the case.
