Byndoor: Death of Rama Poojary - FIR registered, locals end protest

Byndoor, Jan 23: Relating to the recovery of lifeless body of Rama Poojary (34), an auto-rickshaw driver from Nagoor near here next the railway tracks at Neerkeri Kallangadi at Nagoor, Kirimanjeshwar, and the locals had protested as they alleged police hand in this death. The locals were claiming that the man had ended life because of torture meted out by the police based on false complaint filed by a local girl.

The protesters stood their ground and continued their protest at the police station till Wednesday January 22 midnight. They stood firm in their decision not to perform the funeral of the deceased till their demand was met. After senior police officials arrived at the spot and promised to do justice, the protest was withdrawn.


Rama Poojary

The protesters had placed the body in front of Byndoor station and the protest demonstration continued till midnight. At around 12.30 am, senior officials came there and registered case, duly naming policemen and others, after which the protesters relented.

It is said that under instructions from Kundapur assistant superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, Gangolli police constable Mohan and others had taken Rama Poojary to Gangolli police station where he was allegedly tortured. His nephew Raghavendra Poolary, escorted him back to his home from the police station at midnight. Rama Poojary went to bed without having dinner. On January 21 morning, it was found that he had gone missing. After a detailed search, his body was found near the railway tracks at Kirimanjeshwar.

The locals said that Umesh Shanbhag and his daughter Ashwini Shanbhag, had registered false complaint against Rama Poojary. It is said that they also had posed death threats to Poojary. The complaint alleges that the police Umesh Shanbhag and Ashwini Shanbhag are responsible for Rama Poojary's death.

A first information on these lines was registered in Byndoor police station under sections 306, 506, 323, 395 and 149 of Indian Penal Code.
