Mangaluru, Jan 21: The Father Muller Research Centre of the Father Muller Charitable Institutions in collaboration with Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, conducted a workshop on ‘Point of Care Biomedical Technologies: Demonstration and Feasibility Study for indigenous Development of Biomedical Devices’ on January 18.
The resource persons were from varied fields of engineering with a keen interest in bio-medical devices to help man in his sickness and health. The team comprised of scientists from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and National Institute of Technology, Mangaluru.
The eminent scientists were Dr Veluri Sudhakar, scientist engineer, Aeronautical Development Agency, Bengaluru Nodal Agency under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. His main responsibility is development of Advance Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) for the Light Combat Aircraft – Tejas and the Integrated Vehicle Health monitoring (IVHM) for AMCA.
Prof N S Dinesh, professor in Department of Electronics Systems Engineering (DESE) Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru having areas of expertise in Mechatronics, Telematics, Power Electronics, Sensors and Actators and Biomedical Engineering.
Prof M M Nayak, Professor in the Centre for Nanoscience Engineering Department, IISc Bengaluru. His research area is into micro and nano electro mechanical system and sensors. He has developed neuro-muscular electrical stimulation devices and many medical devices and has many patents through ISRO. Having also held the post of director, Launch Vehicle Programme Office, ISRO.
Prof Gangadharan K V, Head, Centre for System Design and Chairman, Central Research Facility (HEFA), Centre for System Design. Prof of NITK in Mechanical Engineering with over 100 publications to his credit.
Dr Sanjeev Rai, chief of Research who was formerly the Dean of the Father Muller Medical College brought together these eminent scientist in the view of developing partnership in research between the medical and engineering field.
Fr Ajith B Menezes, administrator of Father Muller Medical College welcomed the scientists and briefed them about the history of the institution and the future in which the institution is heading. The forenoon session was an interactive one with the heads of departments of the FMMC and the administration with the scientists, followed by a tour of the campus. The post noon session comprised of lectures by the stalwarts with presentations and demonstrations. The talks were followed by the demonstration of biomed devices which have been patented and are into field trials.
The uniqueness of this interactive session was the bringing together of people of different language codes and trying to match their frequency through collaborative efforts. Medicine and mechanics have grown apart but collaborations have led to better quality of life in people. Be it an MRI or ultrasound machine, be it a fully automated hemo analyser, all are engineering technologies used in enhancing the quality of life of the living.
The Father Muller Charitable Institution’s many sister concerns are in the forefront of research and innovations. Be it academic and research activities, the students and faculty are motivated to hone new skills. FMCI director Fr Richard A Coelho, gives push to such activities for the progress of the human kind and the nation itself.
