Puttur, Jan 19: The ministry of human resource and development, government of India, has identified St Philomena College, Puttur as one of the best performing institutions with green smart campus, among 69 higher educational institutions in India focusing on cleanliness, waste management, water conservation and water management.
The institution has been constantly making all the necessary efforts in executing the guidelines of MHRD in the sphere of Swachhta on and off the Campus. The College has stood 4th in Karnataka in efforts to promote cleanliness in villages and making Indian villages open defection-free. The students of social work and the members of NSS, NCC and Eco Club have been actively involved in organizing various programmes and creating environmental awareness among the rural masses. This has been well appreciated and placed on record by the MHRD. The MHRD in its Handbook of Institutional achievements in ‘Swachh Campus Ranking 2019’ recorded the efforts of St Philomena College along with other 68 higher educational institutions.
St Philomena College, Puttur was founded in 1958 by Msgr Antony Patrao, who conscientiously believed that education was the best means of empowerment. In the nascent stages of its growth, the College showed all the signs of becoming a centre of excellence.
Affiliated to Mangalore University, managed by the Catholic Board of Education and recognized by the UGC under 2(f) and 12B, the Institution endeavours to treat the primary stakeholders in six UG and six PG programmes to a rewarding educational experience. On the basis of growth and achievements, the NAAC re-accredited the Institution at 'A' grade in the third cycle.
In the academic year 2019-20, the college has recorded tremendous achievements in curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
Nine ranks in Mangalore University examinations: In undergraduate degree examinations held in the month of April/May 2019, the College has bagged six ranks.
In BSc, Madhura P K, daughter of Dr P S Krishna Kumar and Jayashree of Sanjaya Nagara, Darbe, Puttur taluk has bagged the eighth rank with 94.64 percent, and Christel Livia Mascarenhas, daughter of Francis E Mascarenhas and Florine D’Souza of Mangala Padavu, Bantwal taluk has secured ninth rank with 94.10 percent.

In BBA, Roshni M Y, daughter of M G Yasmin Pasha and Salika of Somawarpet, Coorg district has secured the third rank with 91.16 percent and Shabana, daughter of Noor Mohammad and Farida of Nekkilady, Uppinangady has secured the fourth rank with 88.66 percent of marks.
In BCA, Shivani, daughter of Mohan T P and Shashikala B of Kallare, Puttur has bagged the seventh rank with 95.44 percent.
In BA, Thashreefa Jahan, daughter of Abdul Azeez and Sameena U of Nekkilady, Uppinangady has secured the eighth rank with 84.60 percent of marks.
In postgraduate degree examinations held in the month of May 2019, the PG centre of the College bagged three ranks.
Navya, Aparna, Chaithra
In MCom, Navya Bhat, daughter of N Narendra Bhat and Usha N Bhat of Darbe, Puttur bagged the first rank with 8.25 CGPA, and Aparna G, daughter of Ganapathi L and Sheela of Nehru Nagara, Puttur secured the 10th rank with 8.05 CGPA.
In MSc mathemtics, Chaithra B J, daughter of Jayaraj Yelchithaya and Vani of Gonikoppal, Coorg district secured the first rank with 8.96 CGPA.
Participation of NCC officer and cadets in Republic Day Parade at New Delhi: NCC officer and two NCC cadets of the College have been selected to participate in the prestigious Republic Day Parade on January 26, 2020 in New Delhi.
NCC officer, Lt Johnson David Sequeira, assistant professor of bachelor of social work (BSW) has been selected as contingent officer of Karnataka and Goa directorate to train the cadets in New Delhi.
