Bantwal, Jan 13: The programme of offering 'Vanabhojana (food in the woods)' to 1,001 Ganas pertaining to the Grama Daiva of Mani village in the taluk was held on Sunday, January 13.

This programme is being held since times unknown as per traditions. It is held before the Machchi festival of Mani Sri Ullalthi Daiva. The Vanabhojana programme is held simultaneously in the premises of Ullalthi Daivasthana in Mani village and Arebettu. On the 'Kambalakori' day observed at Arebettu Guthu every year, the day for the Vanabhojana is fixed. In the spots earmarked for the purpose, Vanabhojana is held on the same day. Heads of Maniguthu and Arebettu Guthu families lead the programme, supported by villagers.

'Vanabhojana' entails the devotees of villages offering 'Agelu' to the Daiva Ganas in the form of fulfillment of vows. Devotees normally offer chicken, dry fish, rice, coconuts, horse gram etc in fulfilment of their vows.

The items given by the devotees towards fulfilling their vows are cooked in the middle of the forest where the food is served in the form of 'Agelu' to Daiva Ganas. Later, the villagers together sit down to share the remaining food through 'Vanabhojana'.
