Mangalore, Sep 26: Pragati – 2009, a symposium on “Infrastructure in Mangalore”- Benefits and Challenges to Entrepreneurs was held at AIMIT, Beeri, Ullal, the new campus for Management & IT of St Aloysius College, Mangalore.
Vinaya Hegde, chairman, Lamina Foundation and Nitte Educational Institutions was the chief guest and inaugurated the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Hegde spoke about the factors affecting the development of industries in Dakshina Kannada. The factors he stressed upon were in relation to the physical structure, human aspects, and digital infrastructure situation in Mangalore.
He also said that education is very important in gaining knowledge and developing the industries in Mangalore. The region is very rich in healthcare, IT and tourism among others but lacks road connectivity and hotel infrastructure. For the growth of industries in Mangalore, the youth, especially students should bring in new dimensions to develop the infrastructure. Mangalore should be made as a knowledge hub for resources needs to be shared to benefit the industrial growth in the city.
Fr Denzil Lobo spoke about the importance of infrastructure and the need for development. He also spoke about the benefits and challenges of infrastructure for Mangalore while stressing the importance of education that builds character and makes us more human.
St Aloysius College principal Fr Swebert D’Souza spoke about the environment that is required for the development. He mentioned that St Aloysius College is giving a secure and good environment for education and development for which humanity, tolerance, and brotherhood are the important requirements.
The day had four sessions with first session on Powering Entrepreneurs. Mohandas Prabhu, vice-president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and S Sumanth were the panelists. Mr Ivan D’Souza, president, Mangalore City Autorickshaw Drivers’ Association and Ashok Kumar, technical director, Dix Engineering Projects were the panelists of the second session was on Paving the Way, a session highlighting the woes of the people of Mangalore while traversing the roads.
The third session was on “Propelling Through the Waters” wherein M M Kamath, retired chief engineer, NMPT and Ananth Pai, executive director, Bharath Beedi Works were the panelists. The final session on Infrastructure in Mangalore was held with Dheeraj and Fr Denzil Lobo being the panelists.
