Mangaluru, Jan 9: National Service Scheme (NSS) cell of Nitte (Deemed to be University) is organizing a week-long 'NSS National Integration Camp' in collaboration with State NSS Cell, Govt of Karnataka, Bengaluru and National Regional Directorate, Govt Of India, Bengaluru from January 7 to January 13 at K S Hedge Medical Academy, Deralakatte.
The inaugural ceremony was held on Tuesday January 7 at K S Hegde Auditorium, Deralakatte. The hoisting of the NSS flag marked the opening of the NSS National Integration Camp.
The programme was inaugurated by a lamp lighting ceremony by the dignitaries.
Dr G Kalpana, IAS, additional chief secretary, dept of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Govt of Karnataka, speaking on the importance of NSS said, “NSS instills an understanding of the society we live in. It enhances your organizational competence and help us gain as an individual.
“NSS is the platform to score marks in your life; to find your inner merits, to become the best you that you can be.”
The chief guest of the function, Prof Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, vice-chancellor, Nitte DU, addressing the gathering said, “ National Integration Camp is imperative for our young volunteers in the present day when our nation is faced with serious challenges. National Integration camp provides a platform to mingle, communicate and interact with the co-volunteers and graduates with wisdom.”
N Vinay Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University) in his presidential address said, “Community service is larger than university degree. The greatest satisfaction is released through the community service and NSS provides a platform for it. Education system is the hallmark of discipline. NSS provides larger exposure to discipline.”
Dr Gananath Shetty Yekkar, State NSS Officer and former Officio Joint Secretary, Govt of Karnataka was guest of honour. Prof Dr Alka Kulkarni, registrar, Nitte DU and Prof Dr Sumalatha R Shetty, NSS coordinator, Nitte DU were present.
The seven-day long residential camp aims to provide youth from diverse cultural backgrounds a common platform to interact with each other. The NSS volunteers will be exposed to community welfare projects, programmes related to environmental sensitivity, Shramadaan, yoga and cultural programmes. Volunteers will exchange their ideas through seminars with experts from different fields. The camp is planned to instill among the volunteers, a sense of belongingness toward the country and a spirit of leadership.
