Mangaluru, Jan 8: Shop owners in Thokkottu Smart City commercial complex confronted BJP activists and leaders of Mangaluru block who had arrived to distribute handbills in support of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National registry of Citizens (NRC) there. The shopkeepers shouted ‘Go Back’ slogans against BJP and sent them back from Thokkottu junction on Wednesday evening, January 8. A tense atmosphere prevailed in the vicinity for some time. Ullal and KSRP police arrived at the spot and took the situation under control.
A programme to explain about CAA by distributing handbills at Thokkottu junction at 5 pm was planned by BJP Mangaluru mandala. Block assigned president Chandrahas Pandith House, former president Santhosh Boliar and nearly 50 activists of local leaders had reached Thokkottu Smart City commercial complex after distributing handbills to shops at Thokkottu junction.
The shop owners stopped them at the entrance of the building saying that there is no need to explain CAA as BJP is trying to send Muslims in the country out. “We completely oppose the Act”, they said preventing distribution of pamphlets. There were heated arguments between shops owners and BJP activists. Shop owners shouted ‘Go Back’ slogans against BJP. As people gathered in large number, there was tense atmosphere.
Ullal and KSRP police arrived at the spot and diluted the situation by sending the BJP activists out if the complex.
