Mangaluru, Jan 8: Can the stinking dumping ground at Pachchanady turn into a lush green piece of odourless land accompanied by a playground and park? A project report prepared by Abellon Clean Energy says yes.
The said company based in Gujarat has shown interest in setting up modern waste processing unit here. Experts from the company who had visited Pachchanady have already submitted detailed project report to the city corporation. The report in turn, has been forwarded by the city corporation to the state government with a proposal to accept the same. The project may get the government nod shortly.
Abellon has been setting up waste processing units backed by modern technology in Jamnagar, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Vadpodara etc in Gujarat.
The proposed plant plans to dispose 700 tonnes of waste everyday through power generation and manure production. It has sought 15 acres of land on 25 years lease. In the initial two years, the corporation has to bear the cost of waste processing. Thereafter, Abellon will process waste free of cost by selling power so generated to Mescom.
The proposed plant will have glasses all around. Trucks carrying waste directly enter the unit and unload the waste. The process of segregation of plastic, power generation etc can be viewed from outside. Effluents too get treated there and used to feed plants. The company proposes to setup a stadium and park near the plant and turn it into a tourist spot.
Now, the city produces around 350 tonnes of waste every day and only a small portion of that is being processed. As such, the yard now has a huge stock of about a million tonnes of waste. The waste processing contract was given to a company from Delhi and that contract period has expired.
MLA Vedavyas Kamath, said that the said company has submitted project report. The city needs modern waste processing unit, he agreed. The government will get opinion from experts and take a decision, he added.
