Orissa: Five get Lifer in Kandhamal Violence

Bhubaneswar, Sep 23 (IANS) A fast-track court Wednesday sentenced five people to life term for their role in the murder of a villager during communal violence in Orissa's Kandhamal district last year.

Additional Sessions Judge Sobhan Kumar Das of the fast-track court number 1 at district headquarters of Phulbani sentenced Sabita Pradhan, Papu Pradhan, Abinash Pradhan, Dharmaraj Pradhan and Mania Pradhan to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs.5,000 each on them, special public prosecutor B.K. Pattnaik told IANS.

The court found them guilty of killing Akbar Digal, a pastor of a Baptist church at Tatamaha village, on Aug 26 last year.

Kandhamal district, about 200 km from here, witnessed widespread violence after the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides at his ashram Aug 23.

More than 25,000 Christians fled their villages after their houses were attacked by rampaging mobs, who held the Christian community there responsible for Saraswati's killing although police blamed the Maoists.

The government has set up two fast-track courts to try cases related to the communal violence.

The supporters of Laxmanand Saraswathi got justice by punishing the Christians in Kandhamal, all though they were not a party of killing Laxmanand so case rest there. Secondly according to market grapevine BJP businessmen wanted to start mining business by driving out the Kandhamal Christians as Kandhamal was rich in minerals and killing of Laxmananand was a excuse to start the riot.

Mr.Jerome, Mangalore, your comment is absolutely right. Well-done Mr.soobhan Kumar das. But, that fast-track court is sentencing for only one side? Where is the justice for other community? If your judgment is impartial you must nab those culprits who were murdered the Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati. Still you are on blaming the Maoists!!! Blaming means there was no any investigation till today? It’s really a fractional judgment.

Land mark judgement. The people behind such a nasty violence must be punished who orchastriced the violence and must be hanged. This is just a tip of a huge ice berg. Lot more punishment yet to be pronounced. One question to Pradhan brothers - what did you all get from killing this christian priest? Does the priest had no right to live like you? Didnt he has the freedom to preach and practice in what he believed? Was his religious affialiation was motive for the priest's killing? Where are those bigwigs who set Kandhamal on fire now?

Are they not roaming free and enjoying their life? Are you not paying a dear price for the conspiracy hatched by your mentors? Are you prepared to spend 14 years in jail? What will happen to your wife and children whilst you are in jail? If you want to be pardoned, would you bring back the dead person whom you killed to life??? The question continues but you dont have any answer.
