Kolkata, Sep 23: The Mangalorean Community of Kolkata celebrated Monti Fest or The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady at Park Circus Parish Hall , Kolkata with traditional flavour of Konkani prayers, recently.

Fr Phillip D’Souza led the prayer in Konkani and Fr Gregory Monteiro explained the traditional significance of the feast for all Mangaloreans. Fr John Noronha welcomed the gathering and blessed the sugarcane, which was subsequently distributed to each family present. The function was organised by the Kanara Catholic Association (KCA), Kolkata.

Children venerated the statue of Mother Mary with flowers along with solemn hymns like ‘Sakkad Sangatha Meliyan’ and ‘Moriak Hogolsian’. The new rice paddy had been brought from Mangalore and the customary ‘vorn’ was prepared for all present.

After the veneration, there were games for all participants with Konkani music being played in the background.

Nice to see our people celebrating Monti Pest.It was time for me to be nostalgic about the few years I spent there. Good to see our tradition that was nonexistant there now coming alive.
