Bengaluru, Jan 5: Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday January 5 slammed the state goverment over its proposal to rename Ramanagara as 'Nava Bengaluru', saying that such a move would be an 'insult' to Lord Rama.
Taking to Twitter, Kumaraswamy alleged that chief minister Yediyurappa was trying to settle a score with him by renaming Ramanagara, and also accused the state government of trying to sell the fertile lands of Ramanagara to capitalists,
Addressing his tweet to Yediyurappa, Kumaraswamy said, "If you wish to develop Ramanagara, just release the funds I had allocated for its development in my budget. If you want to develop it still further, you have mine as well as the people's full support. But do not set fire to the district's culture and identity by changing its name."
He further questioned the logic behind changing the name. "Ramanagara is surrounded by hills. Ramadevara hill is situated in the midst of seven hills. That is why it is called Ramanagara. The district has been named after Rama. To change its name would be to go against BJP's own principles. It is an insult to Rama," he said.
"The government should immediately withdraw its proposal to rename Ramanagara. If not, we will be forced to launch a protest," he said.
