Mangaluru, Jan 3: Murari R Habbar (77), a retired teacher and resident of Sidda Hosabettu near Suratkal, was killed in an accident which happened on the night of Wednesday. Hebbar had also functioned as chief naval officer of National Cadet Corps (NCC).
Hebbar had visited Udupi on some work. He arrived by bus at around 10 pm and alighted at Hosabettu on national highway 66 to walk to his home. He was knocked down to death by an unidentified vehicle which fled away after causing the accident. The police on beat duty found him lying in an unconscious state on national highway and arranged to shift him to Wenlock Hospital here. From there, he was shifted to a private hospital, but his life could not be saved.
The police have now launched an effort to identify the killer vehicle. They have been checking CCTV footage in this regard.
Hebbar has left behind wife. He had served Vidyadayini high school where he taught science and mathematics. He also handled the NCC unit of the high school. He was the vice president of Hosabettu village association.
