Bengaluru, Jan 1: December 31 happened to be an auspicious day for onion lovers who cannot do without this bulbous vegetable. The price of onions which had reached 100 to 120 a kg a few days back, came down sharply to Rs 60 to 65 per kg at the Agricultural Produce Market /committee market at Yeshwantpur here.
Some have assigned inflow of 30,000 bags of onion into the market as reason for this sudden slide. Moreover, the trades expect huge consignment of freshly harvested onions to arrive in the market by next week from Maharashtra. This also would have affected the onion prices.
Retailers continue to sell onion at Rs 80 or 90 per kg. Good quality onion was priced by Horticultural Producers Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society outlets at Rs 119 per kg. Low quality onions are sold to retailers at as low as Rs 20 to 45 a kg.
In Yeshwantpur market, Turkey onions commanded price of around Rs 40 per kg whereas Egyptian ones were sold at Rs 40 to 45 per kg. The merchants say that there is low demand for imported onions.
