Udupi: Nirmala English Medium School Brahmavar undertake eagle’s eye expedition, excursion

Udupi, Dec 30: Expeditions encourage students to observe, explore and be curious. For them to be successful in life, they need to be curious and be able to explore on their own. This personalized learning and peer-to-peer sharing encourages students to be active learners and take ownership of their education. 60 students of Nirmala English Medium School Brahmavar, class 1 to 4 along with the principal, Fr Joslie D’Silva and staff members recently went on an expedition to Udupi and Karkala.



Purposes and advantages of expeditions:

i. It provides a direct source of knowledge and acquaints the students with first-hand information
ii. It provides an opportunity to the students for development of their aesthetic sense
iii. By such excursions students become interested in exploring their environment
iv. It helps to develop in students a love for nature and to acquaint them with real happiness in the outside world
v. It helps in the development of power of observation, exploration, judgment and drawing inferences, as well as problem-solving ability of students
vi. It helps in developing qualities of resourcefulness, self-confidence, initiative and leadership among students
vii. It helps in developing a cooperative attitude and various other optimistic attitudes
viii. It helps in the proper utilization of leisure
ix.  It motivates the students for self-study and self-activity
x.   It helps in the development of creative faculties of the students

The journey began from the school ground and the first place visited was Sri Krishna Temple at Udupi. The students queued to have a glimpse of the statues, goddess, prayer hall and Kanakana kindi in Kirshna math temple.

Thereafter, they proceeded to Karkala's 'St Lawrence Shrine Attur Church which was built in 1759 and is purported to be the site of many miracles. It is characterized by Attur Jatre or Attur festival.

Break and refreshment time was on the portico of the Attur church.

The next destination was Bahubali Gommateshwara, a 42 feet monolithic statue at Karkala which was built in 1432 CE by King Vir-Pandya of Kalasa Karkala dynasty. They climbed a huge rock on which the Gomateshwara statue is located. The rock has been cut to create steps for the visitors and climbing 500 steps was great fun.

The next destination was John’s Water World. After lunch, at the water park, the children enjoyed the water and played all the water games and water slides.

In the evening it was time to pack up and head towards Brahmavar. On the way they stopped at Malpe beach for a photo session and then dispersed to their school. This was an enjoyable eagle’s eye expedition and excursion at Udupi and Karkala.
