Puttur, Dec 30: After a container truck hit a passenger jeep at Bedrody in Bajathur village near Uppinangady on Sunday December 29, the jeep driver lost his life. Eight others were injured.
The jeep used to ferry passengers from Nelyady to Uppinangady and also undertook return trips regularly. A container that was moving towards Bengaluru from Mangaluru hit the jeep at Bedrody road bend on national highway 75. On account of the force of the collision, the jeep got badly mangled. Driver of the jeep. Abubakker Siddique from Puduvettu near Nelyady, suffered serious injuries. Even though he was admitted into the hospital at Puttur, his life could not be saved.

Suresh (35) from Kattemajalu, and Malick alias Ayub (40) from Golithottu, whose injuries were of grave nature, were admitted into a private hospital at Mangaluru. Odiappa (50) from Bajathur, Raja (46) from Kaukrady, Vasant (40) from Panja, Poovappa Gowda (45) from Rekha and Ramakunja resident, Gururaj, were admitted into a hospital in the city. Ambulance driver, Shaqir, staff of 'Arogya Kavacha' scheme, Uppinangady police and locals helped in admitting the injured into hospitals.
The driver of the container truck tried to flee from the accident scene immediately after the accident but the locals chased the container, intercepted it at Valalu village and succeeded in handing over the vehicle and its driver to the police.
As soon as the news about the death of jeep driver spread, members of Jeep Drivers and Owners Association condoled his death and suspended operations of the passenger jeeps in the area for a day as a mark of respect for the deceased.
