Udupi, Dec 29: Special public prosecutor in the district chief and sessions court here, Vijay Vasu Poojary, has resigned from his post.

In an email sent to the director of prosecutions and government litigations, Cauvery Bhavan, Bengaluru, he said he was resigning on account of current happenings and political pressures. He said that he would be sending a copy of the resignation letter to the court registrar.

Poojary had been appointed as special public prosecutor with effect from May 22, 2015.

Sometime back, an accused in a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act who was held guilty, had hurled a shoe at Poojary, having been angered by the fact that he was sentenced based on Poojary's arguments in the court. Thereafter, the accused in POCSO Act cases were barred from wearing shoes during the hearing. Poojary was noted for handling of prosecution cases efficiently and ensuring that the guilty got punished.
