Mangaluru, Dec 25: The SDPI urged the state government to file a criminal case against police officers for causing the deaths of 2 innocent persons during the anti-CAA protest at Min the city on December 19.
A criminal case should be filed against police commissioner Dr P S Harsha, DCP Arunangshu Giri and inspector Shantharam Kunder.
SDPI state president Mohammed Illiyas Thumbe said, "The aggressive attitude of the police commissioner led the protestors to be violent. The protestors had approached the commissioner to seek permission for the protest, but were denied. How can a police commissioner suppress the democratic right to protest?
"The police department has misguided the people by producing false statements about the incident. From the video footage on the cop Shantharam Kunder, it is evident that the police had every intention to kill someone from the Muslim community.
"Police claim that the protestors tried to snatch arms and set fire to the police station.
"SDPI will take up the legal battle against the three cops and their decisions causing the death of innocent people. We have already approached the legal counsel to fight against the cops. SDPI is also planning to hold a protest in the coming days against CAA and NRC."
SDPI district president, Athaullah Jokatte, secretaries, Iqbal Bellare, Ashraf Manchi, treasurer, Noorullah Kulai, corporator, Muneeb Bengre and others were present.
