Mangaluru, Dec 25: The police who have registered 24 cases so far relating to the violence which broke out during anti Citizenship Ammendment Act (CAA) protest held in the city on December 19, have put together over 350 footages so far. Ten among these cases were registered in Bunder station, 13 in Pandeshwar, and one in rural station. Over eight persons have already been taken into custody.
The anti-CAA protest on December 19 had taken an ugly turn after protesters pelted stones and petrol bombs, and police resorted to lathi-charge, used tear gas shells and opened fire. Two persons, Jaleel and Nausheen, died as a result.
It is learnt that the police have identified over a hundred culprits based on facial features visible in the footage. Some of them have been taken into custody for questioning. Over a thousand CCTV video clips which the police have got in response to the city police commissioner's tweet seeking footages of the disturbances are being scrutinized by experts.
A few photos and videos so collected, which have been uploaded on the Facebok page of the city police have become viral. TV channels have also shown several of these footages.
An experienced team of experts from Bengaluru are examining CCTV footages, video clips, photos etc which were received from the police and the general public. Cyber crime team, intelligence team, teams of technicians, central crime branch teams, and crime record bureau have been working together in investigating the disturbances, it is gathered.
A case was also filed in the meantime in Bunder police station relating to posting of the photo of a police inspector who was involved with the operation. Kadri police station inspector, Shantaram, who has been accused of uttering some provocative words, has been relieved from station duties. Investigation is under way relating to the video footage overing the incident. It is gathered that the city police commissioner ordered to relieve him from station duties after the video of the inspector's conversation went viral.
