Mangaluru, Dec 24: The Mangaluru police have released CCTV footages of stone-pelting in the recent protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), raising suspicions of the violence being 'pre-planned'.
The stone-pelting and damages to public property are clearly visible in the footage and photos released by the police. The protests that began peacefully took an ugly turn in the afternoon of December 19. The protesters pelted stones and burnt tyres, and police resorted to lathi-charge, use of tear gas shells, and opened fire, resulting in the death of two persons.
Police who have released photos and videos have requested for information including the address of the miscreants. They have announced that the details of the informants will be kept confidential. Some protesters have covered their faces with cloth and broken CCTVs. In some videos, people are seen changing the direction of the CCTV camera so that the misdeeds of miscreants may not be recorded, thereby evoking suspicions of whether the violence was 'pre-planned'.
It is also claimed that sacks filled with stones were stored on a goods auto. A video purportedly shows protesters picking stones from the sacks and pelting them.
Attempts to enter gun shop: Police are investigating the incident in which the protesters who indulged in violence had attempted to enter a shop selling guns, bullets and gun powder at Golikatta bazar. The attempts failed at the last minute as per sources.
The gun shop is situated just about 150 meters away from Bunder police station. The accused protesters had broken the wooden door and tried the break open the shutter of the shop. The destruction was averted as police vehicle reached the spot in the nick of time.
The Mangaluru police have posted the videos and photos of the protest related violence on their Facebook page. In response several netizens also posted videos and photos, including some showing cops allegedly harassing citizens on the day of the protest as well as during the subsequent curfew. Some videos however show cops helping citizens reach their homes safely in the midst of the violence.
