Panaji, Dec 23: To protect the ancient church and convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Chimbel, the town and country planning (TCP) department has notified its plan for objections and suggestions.

"Once the process is completed and the site is considered as a heritage building under the category of institutional buildings, no plans can carry out on the site without conservation committee's approval," one of the TCP officials said.

TCP has issued a notice under regulation 6B 2 C of the Goa land development and building construction regulations, 2010 to include the iconic site with the façade and the ruins of the church and convent in the list of Goa’s buildings and sites of historic and aesthetic importance.

As per the Villagers in the area, the status of a 'heritage building' will help in the conservation of the church as funds would be provided by the government for the same.
