Kerala court allows dismissed nun Sr Lucy Kalapurakkal to remain at convent

Wayanad, Dec 19 (IANS): A Catholic nun who was dismissed from her congregation on Thursday, December 19, got a relief from a lower court near here, as she was allowed to remain at the convent.

It was in August this year the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) after getting the clearance from the Vatican dismissed Sr Lucy Kalapurakkal from the church at Manathavady in Kerala for disobeying church authorities.

Since then, she has been up in arms against the convent for this and a group of supporters joined hands together and approached the Manathavady Munsiff Court against her ouster from her convent.

On Thursday hearing the petition, the court gave an injunction to her ouster and posted the case for January 1.

Sr Kalapurakkal had last year supported the nuns' strike in the state demanding the arrest of rape-accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who headed the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar.

A nun had filed an FIR accusing against Mulakkal of having raped her at Kerala's Kuravilangad church between 2014 and 2016.

Mulakkal was arrested in September following the protest and is currently out on bail.

However, Sr Kalapurakkal became a target of the Church authorities after she joined the nuns protest against the delay in Mulakkal's arrest despite the FIR against him.

Since then, she had been receiving notices from the church on flimsy charges such as airing her opinion about the bishop on TV channels, owning a car and writing a book.

Incidentally, it was the Kerala High Court, early this month declined to ban the nun's autobiography titled "Karthavinte Namethil (In the name of Christ)" and later it was released.

Logic is simple. It is like you marry a girl and bring her to live with you at your parents house. One fine day your parents want to throw her out of the house on the pretext of silly mistakes. Then what are her rights under the law?

It is very much unfortunate that it has become the practice to silence the voice of justice seekers by the Church Authorities in Catholic faith on top orders through the influence of power and money. Seeking justice is not to be termed as disobeying church authorities. Earlier Kerala High Court and now Lower Court have meted out justice to Sr. Lucy. Only TRUTH will win at the end. It is our faith and belief that only God can save us and provide justice through His merciful hands.
