Bengaluru: Concerned at reduced beer consumption, state government delves into reasons

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 18: It has come to light that the number of people consuming beer in the state has been dwindling. Taking this matter seriously, the excise department has ordered for a thorough investigation.

In the past, sale of beer showed an increasing trend year after year. However, this time, the quantum of beer sale has declined. The department, which was hoping to increase the beer sale just like in previous years, is dismayed and disturbed by the unexpected down slide.

The excise commissioner of Karnataka has ordered all the excise joint commissioners and deputy commissioners to conduct a study about this reversing trend and submit reports.

The department has found that the quantum of beer consumption and percentage-wise sales have been on the wane. The department has viewed this in all seriousness and asked the officials to find out the reasons which contributed to the descending sale of beer, conduct detailed analysis, and submit report with recommendations about steps to be taken to reach the sales target.

Bar Owners’ Association representative Karunakar Hegde, wondered how they can achieve higher sales, if the department fails to supply the quantity demanded.

Some bar owners said that the excise department normally supplies only liquor as it earns better profit there. As beer does not bring good revenue to the government, the department has not been supplying beer in enough quantities. They said that even though they were demanding for beer supply, the department never supplied enough beer stock to them.

Let us view this purely from a demand supply problem.
    1. Revenue for excise dept is dwindling due to lower beer consumption. Best way is the reduce tax. Excise department has continuously raised tax on beer from Rs. 90 in 2015 to Rs.145 today. That is 20% year on year increase in price. Salaries or income has not increased at that rate. Bullish extraction of money from beer consumers is the main reason for lower consumption. Added to this, slowing economy, lost jobs etc. As the consumption as fallen, only way out is to reduce tax on the beer.
    2. 60% of the 240 Sub-registrars have failed to achieve the revenue target. Here too, the guidance value was continuously increased with increasing market price. Government should understand that markets are not sustainable at these prices. They should consider downward revision of guidance value to prop up demand. Guidance values are the main reason why real-estate market is at unsustainable levels. People who want to exit, have no way out of their investment at lower prices.

Government should get out of this mind-set that their single point agenda is to fleece everyone no matter the market condition.

    Indian business model is...
Wine shops / Wine Mart / Bar & Restaurents / Liquor outlet licenses are given to the same guys to open their chain in different locations by saying expanding business. Others are not allowed to Own shops. Same guy will make money in crores & crores.
People should get away with this bad habbit of consuming liquor & Beer.
This menace is visible in each & every sector.
Our business policy is let one guy become rich & others just keep on working for him lifetime.

Next time you’re in Sweden, you can grab a bottle of beer made from sewage. Nya Carnegiebryggeriet brewery, Carlsberg and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) recently collaborated on a pilsner that includes organic malt, hops… and recycled wastewater.

The beer launched on May 25th.

Called PU:REST the idea behind the brew is to raise awareness about the ability to make wastewater into safe drinking water, which happened before the water made its way into the brew, Lonely Planet reports.

“Ultimately, this comes down to beating the drum for sustainable water treatment, and for the value of fresh water,” Staffan Filipsson of IVL said in a press release.
Purification for the water happens at Sweden’s Hammarby water treatment plant.

Nya Carnegiebryggeriet is jointly owned by Carlsberg and Brooklyn Brewery. The beer will be available this summer in Sweden at retailers as well as at some selected bars and festivals.

Simple logic says that common tipplers don't have the money to spend on a beer costing 100 bucks; all this due to severe economic crisis, unemployment, job losses across sectors, gulf boom coming to an end, natural calamities, high inflation!
Even the cheapest IMFL sales has fallen down drastically, which shows that even coolie type workers too have no money for booze

Alcohol drinkers would not give up consuming liquor unless some medical problems warn them of the consequence. That happens with chain smokers too.
A bottle of Beer now a days costs close 100 Rupees and the intoxication in beer is only 5% so minimum 4-5 bottles required to come into the mood but 10 times we have run to loo.
The beer sale may increase due to the Christmas and New year season. Enjoy !

Per capita consumption of alcohol or beer may be more among Christians, but a Hindu Liquor shop owner told me to consider the population of Christians, which is around 2.3%. He told me, his shop is running because Hindus who are in majority, who purchase the liquor on many festivals of theirs and if not for Hindus drinking, his business would have been shut long back. Yes, during Christmas sale is more, but, still consider Christians population.

Ha ha. Why they have to research for reasons? It's a natural phenomenon of economics.
You increase taxes and make anything expensive the sales will decrease, whereas you make anything cheaper even by a very small margin, and see the sales shooting upwards.
Moreover, winter is setting in after a long monsoon period. It is obvious that people prefer hard liquour over chilled beer during such times.
Other reasons could be loss of jobs, reduced incomes and increasing prices of other essential commodities which have priority over beer.

sometimes I really do not understand where this country is heading?

The recent flood victims have not yet got the compensation. There are scores of people not having jobs. The price of essential commodities is rising. The state has not had a proper government since May 2018.

And the least a state government can do is to ask a report on why the beer consumption is dwindling?

Only Lord ParaBrahma knows, probably, what is happening in this country of snake charmers and magicians as addressed by the Britishers when they entered India first.
