Mangaluru, Dec 18: Amidst concerns about the water level at Thumbe vented dam not being able to meet water needs of city dwellers during the summer months in view of hot weather, Dakshina Kannada district in-charge secretary and managing director of Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd, V Ponnuraj, instructed the officials to conduct spot inspection and submit report immediately about increasing the level of water in the said dam to seven metres.
He was speaking at the district development review meeting held here on Tuesday, December 17.
"The revenue, survey, and city corporation officials should accurately assess the areas which will get submerged due to the increase in the level of water at Thumbe dam which supplies water to the city. More toilets should be built in bus stands, markets and other important junctions the cities and towns and they should be properly maintained. To gather response from toilet users, proper equipment should be installed in the toilet premises," he said.
Ponnuraj noted that the progress of housing schemes in the district is not satisfactory. He asked the officials to keep regular contact with the beneficiaries and see that house construction is accelerated. He noted that construction of 600 houses in Iddya village has begun, and wanted the officials to see that the project is properly implemented.
He wanted repair works in respect of houses damaged due to excessive rains to be completed on a war footing. He said that the government pays one lac rupees to each family that has faced losses.
Ponnuraj asked the deputy commissioner to submit a proposal to the government to complete over 12,000 pending 11e cases relating to making correction in the records with the help of retired revenue staff who can be appointed on the basis of honorarium and asked officials to personally check whether the first instalment of one lac rupees to persons who lost their houses due to rains is disbursed.
Deputy commissioner of the district Sindhu P Rupesh, additional deputy commissioner M J Roopa, city corporation commissioner Shanadi Ajit Kumar, and deputy forest conservator Karikalan, were present.
