Kundapur, Dec 18: In a joint operation conducted by police personnel from the town and Bhatkal under the guidance of Udupi district superintendent of police (SP) Nisha James, three persons who were found smuggling gold by train were arrested on Tuesday December 17. The identities of the arrested persons have been given as Muhammed Ismail, Rahif, and Syed Ummer Bhatkal, all from Bhatkal. Gold ornaments weighing 1.633 kg valued at about Rs 61.47 lac not backed by any documents were seized from their possession.
The operation was conducted by Kundapur assistant superintendent of police in coordination with his counterpart at Bhatkal.
The local assistant superintendent of police (ASP), Hariram Shankar, got information that gold was being smuggled through train illegally from the direction of Ernakulum. He deputed police personnel to Kundapur, Byndoor, and Bhatkal railway stations. At Byndoor railway station, 253 grams of gold coins and ornaments were recovered from Ismail Bhatkal. At Bhatkal, 1.166 kg gold ornaments found in the possession of Rahif were seized, and 213 grams of gold was taken into possession from Syed Ummer.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Udupi district SP and instructions of Bhatkal ASP Nikhil and Kundapur ASP Hariram Shankar along with Byndoor circle police inspector (CPI) Suresh Nayak, Udupi CPI Manjunath, Kundapur sub-inspector Harish R Naik apart from police sub-inspectors of Bhatkal and Kumata stations as well as probationary police sub-inspector Sudarshan.
