Mangaluru: Reservation criterion for city mayor may be changed to 'general'

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 17: There is every likelihood of the reservation criterion set for the post of the mayor of the city from 'backward classes A category' to general category.

It has been a month since the BJP coasted to victory in the city corporation council election with an emphatic mandate from the people. The new administration has not yet taken over control in spite of the fact that BJP is ruling the state, because of reservation confusion.

The reservation criteria for the posts of the mayor and deputy mayor had been announced during last November. The ministers are in two minds about retaining or changing the reservation rule. As the government is currently busy with ministry expansion and other issues, the city corporation issue is waiting in the wings. It may be recalled that even the election to the council was held with delay as many had filed objections in the court against reservation criteria fixed by the government.

Some corporators claim that the government will change the criterion from 'backward A' category' to general to facilitate senior BJP leader and corporator Premananda Shetty, to become mayor.
