Kundapur, Dec 17: It may be recalled that after a woman, Sujatha, whose bleeding after delivery on Saturday at the government hospital here could not be stopped and who died on Sunday, at Manipal Hospital, family members of the lady supported by members of the public had mobbed the government hospital here by way of protest. As a repercussion, chief medical officer (CMO) of the government taluk hospital here, Dr Robert Rebello, has been transferred as per the orders of the deputy secretary of the government, citing dereliction of duty and misconduct.

With this, Dr Rebello is facing the threat of transfer for the second time in the recent past. A few days back, he had been suspended from service and his transfer had been ordered but he had approached Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) and succeeded in getting a stay order against the transfer. He had thereafter reported for duty again at the taluk government hospital here.

It is said that the government had received complaint that the CMO was guilty of dereliction of duty and misconduct in the case pertaining to the death of Sujatha. Deputy secretary in the department of health and family welfare N Laxman, issued this order as per which Dr Rebello has been transferred to the primary health centre at Cherambane, Kodagu district near Madikeri. Dr Udayashankar, who had earlier functioned as medical officer of the hospital and has currently been discharging duty as general surgeon, has been appointed as acting CMO in Dr Rebello's place.

Political conspiracy alleged

There are allegations that political conspiracy and interference have worked behind this transfer. It is being alleged that Dr Robert Rebello is facing political vendetta as he happens to be the son-in-law of former Congress MLA Winnifred Fernandes. The people here have been wondering about the need of transfer of Dr Robert Rebello, even though he did not have any role in the case pertaining to the demise of woman post her delivery. A number of people are of the opinion that the stay order issued by KAT earlier will hold good for this transfer too.

I don't know how and why CMO should be held responsible when the actual case is handled by another female doctor ???
And if the govt secretary is rushed to take a call without proper investigation, then it is politically motivated!!!
Its shame these things are happening in our region where people are educated and literacy is highest, yet our people act so hastily, shocking !!!

Few weeks ago this same CMO was given marching orders and no detail on what he did wrong, other than dereliction of duty ??? I think he seems to be a honest and a good doctor yet few doctors are hell bent to move him out so that their ways of stupidity cannot be monitored and controlled by the disciplined CMO

i really don't understand why this doctor should be transferred in the episode !
just look at the statistics in most advanced countries hospitals. No hospital of any country in this hospital with any number of doctors / equipment can not give guarantee about any treatment for any human .
some medical conditions & results are unpredictable. some deaths in hospital can not be prevented at all. Bleeding after delivery is one such condition with unpredictable condition ... coagulation abnormalities, pulmonary embolism, DIC, etc --- can not be avoided if happens & GOD only knows why it happens in some unfortunate people.
If the general public handle the doctors in this manner, no future doctor will take up difficult cases & send to tertiary care/ big/costly/ corporate hospitals leading to high expenditures. Even in these high end hospitals some deaths can not be avoided as medicine is not yet reached the state of 100% immortality.
let us help the family in this difficult situation , but asking for compensation from a doctor for post partum bleeding is nothing but, hafta vassoli behavior.
why Dr Robert was transferred ? just because some semi-literate, ill-informed people make noise !!
If the family of the diseased feel that something went wrong, they have the meaningful way to address their issues... not hijacking the system in political way !!. And how come the non-medical people can decide when to conduct normal vaginal delivery or cesarean section delivery ? If they are so experts, why did consult doctor, they could have done themselves.
one-thing, because of MBAs in heath care administration, people have lost faith in the system & second issue is when it comes to health care, every one is experts as seen in TV channels , news papers & social media. No accountability for anyone , except for qualified doctors.
Doctor can't give 100% guarantee of treatment ,hospital can't cure all illness,Govt can't give 100% free health care. Nobody is immortal ! God bless.

I feel sad for the death of the lady .But sometimes everything is not under control of the physician in medical practice. Things can go wrong anytime. It may be hard sometimes for the doctor to save life. Let's stand together at this moment

    Dear Sreekumar, Kundapura muthumahal

People prefer Private hospital for this reason.

Govt. doctors paid by the govt. Their care towards patient is not with love. It is just with duty.

I can tell it is the fault of the female doctor who attended Sujathas case.

My father met with an accident one finger fractured doctor took one week to operate. He had terrible pain. He didnt had large amount to pay the private doctor. After 6 days I told my father let us go to Private hospital borrow from somebody and pay. We asked dischage to go to private hospital and that night his finger operated.

There is much more than meets the eye. How is it possible to come to a conclusion within one or two days of the incident and I wonder how the CMO is directly involved. Nothing is said about the person who is directly involved. It appears outlandish.

God is with him. He will surely protected and guided by God anywhere if he is under the wings of God.

I wish him all success in his next duty place.

How you can penalize a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for the dereliction of duty for the death of a patient if he is not directly involved. Why not investigate the matter and ask for the report in three days. Why not name the doctor who was in attendance for the delivery. Asking for the head of the CMO is really a political vendetta.
