Kundapur, Dec 16: There is extreme public anger over the death of Sujatha, who died due to excessive bleeding during delivery on Sunday, December 16, at the public hospital of the town. The public of Kundapur gheraoed the hospital on Monday, December 16 and protested against the negligence of doctor.
The family of the deceased and the public accused the hospital authorities of not conducting caesarean even though the report of scanning that was done when the deceased was eight months pregnant clearly stated that normal delivery is not possible.
Speaking on the occasion, social worker and BJP president Shankar Ankadakatte said, "The family, which is in dire straits is completely devastated due to the death of the young woman, who was the bread winner of the family."
Radhadas Kumbhashi, president of Women consoling centre said, "The doctors who are supposed to examine all the patients, including women, who visit the public hospital are not reporting to work on time. In addition, they show negligence with the patients. Due to this Sujatha died during delivery."
The family of deceased Sujatha urged the administration to provide compensation and also justice.
Later there was mediation between the protesters and the medical officers of the hospital due to the intervention of the police. Responding to the accusation of the public, medical officer Dr Robert Rebello said that the medical staff of the hospital have not done any dereliction of duty. He also assured the family of the deceased that he will honestly try to get the compensation that is available from the government.
Obstetrician Dr Rajini, who conducted the delivery of the deceased said, "I have done my work honestly. The caesarean section would have had adverse effect on the health of the deceased and that is why I have done normal delivery. The baby is also healthy. However, due to excessive bleeding Sujatha died."
When the protesters asked the medical officer to provide emergency relief to the family, he did not agree. Medical officer Dr Robert Rebello said, "The health department has ordered an inquiry on Dr Rajani, who conducted the delivery. If the department finds any wrong doing, it will take suitable action on her. There is no provision to provide financial compensation."
It is learnt that the family of the deceased are going to file a complaint in this regard with the Kundapur police station. Now the locals have decided to provide quick relief to the family of Sujatha through donation.
