Moodbidri: Girl of coastal Karnataka origin wins two power lifting gold medals

Moodbidri, Dec 16: In the two-day power lifting championship held at Moscow, Russia, which ended on Sunday December 15, Nimmi Rai Parekh, native of coastal belt of Karnataka, won two golds with world record.

In the 55 kg category on Saturday, she got gold medal by lifting record 172.5 kg weight. In the dead lift on Sunday, she lifted 165 kg weight, another world record.

Nimmi is the daughter of treired physical education teacher from Venoor, Dakshina Kannada, Sadashiva Rai and Jayalaxmi, teacher of Moodbidri Hosabettu government high school. Rai is now physical education teacher of Lion’s English medium school Sacheripet.

Taking inspiration from her father, a physical education teacher, Nimmi's interest in sports were kindled when she was very young. She completed her BCom degree course through Alva's College here. She represented her college in football and hurdles. She secured MBA degree and worked for HSBC Bengaluru for two years. She then married Sunny Parekh, an entrepreneur from Chhattisgarh, in 2015. She continuing to train even after marriage and was selected in the qualifying round of the weight lifting championship held at Bengaluru during October last.
