Karkala, Dec 16: A gang of strangers barged into a house at Kudaru Summanaguthu near Ajekar on Saturday, December 14, assaulted the family members and tried to rob valuables.
Kushala Hegde, wife of the late Jeevandhar Hegde, was watching television programme at her home at around 7.45 pm on Saturday along with her younger sister, Jayashree, and daughter, Anwitha, when a gang of five entered their house. The gang wanted to know where 'Anna' (brother in Kannada) was. As the family does not have a male member, they wanted to know whom the gang was referring to. The unidentified men then rolled gum tape around their mouths, hands and legs, and tried to relieve them of their valuables.
At that time, the late Jeevandhar Hegde's sister-in-law Satyvati Ballal, arrived there in an auto rickshaw. When she raised an alarm, the gang ran into a nearby thicket.
Even though the gang had forced open the doors of an almirah in the house, they did not take away any valuables. Anwitha and Lalitha suffered minor injuries.
The locals expressed the apprehension that the gang would have had 15 members. It is gathered that they even had spray canisters. There is suspicion that the gang would have attacked this family on account of some dispute. Locals may also have played a role, it is said.
Karkala rural police have registered a case.
