Mangaluru, Dec 14: The National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS, was launched in Mahatma Gandhi Centenary year 1969 to develop student’s personality through community service. The objective of the National Service is educational and is attained through the service to the community. The symbol for NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world-famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Odisha, India. It signifies movement in life across time and space, the symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change. For the benefit of the students and their service to the community, St Aloysius ITI, Mangalouru took an initiative to commence an NSS unit.
The NSS unit of St Aloysius ITI, Mangaluru for the academic year 2019-20 was inaugurated on December 14 at the college auditorium. Later, an NSS prayer was sung by the NSS volunteers. Divakar Shetty, chief guest addressing the gathering said, "The main objective of the NSS is 'Not me but you', hence NSS volunteers have to be ready for any emergency service. He gave an insight into the various activities to be conducted through NSS such as social awareness, orientation on Social and Health issues, education, environment, health, national integration, plastic collection, campus cleaning, donating blood etc. Joining the NSS for a certificate is of no use, instead by being an NSS volunteer, how much you have gained and given to the community is more important. By being an NSS volunteer you can learn to be well-disciplined, have time sense, get adjusted with other volunteers, have self-confidence, develop your personality, can give speeches. By making mistakes, we get experience and by the experience, we can reduce the mistakes. Through the NSS programme, we have to give service to the nation.”
In the presidential address, Fr Cyril D’mello SJ, director of the institution said, "In this corporate world or society no one is given free service, everything has to be paid. In the present world, we should not only expect from society but also give to society, hence NSS volunteers should be active at any time for their service to the community. The main objective of St Aloysius Insitutions is 'we prepare men and women for others', hence an NSS volunteer has to work for the progress of the society and not for any personal gain.”
Vatan Bhandary, president, NSS coordinator proposed the vote of thanks. The function was compered by NSS volunteer, Reeyon Prathwil D’Souza.
The programme concluded with the NSS song sung by all the NSS volunteers.
