Udupi, Dec 13: Deputy commissioner of the district G Jagadeesha, expressing serious concern about the fact that more and more college students are getting addicted to intoxicating substances, asked officials to rein in drug abuse. He instructed the officials to launch a campaign against this menace by creating awareness through programmes allover the district.
He was speaking after presiding over the meeting of the district level committee on The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act held at the office of the deputy commissioner on Thursday December 12. Deputy superintendent of police Jaishankar, informed the meeting that over 240 persons accused of supplying drugs have been arrested. He said that these peddlers mainly targeted college students.
Psychiatrist Dr P V Bhandary, regretted about the supply of drugs to students through online and other avenues. Senior civil judge Kaveri, promised to extend help from district legal services authority. The deputy commissioner wanted detailed investigation to be held into the allegation of supplying drugs online.
District public prosecutor Shantha Bai, zilla panchayat deputy secretary Kiran Pednekar, and deputy director of public instruction Sheshashayana Karinja, were present.
