Puttur, Dec 12: All the accused students, who were involved in the gang rape of a girl student, studying in first year of a prestigious college of the town that took place in a car at a deserted area of Bellippady Katara of the taluk were granted bail by the high court. All the accused were in judicial custody so far.
The accused who were given bail by the high court are Gurunandan (19), resident of Ganadamoole of Bajathur village, Prajwal (19), residing at Rajashree Kripa of Perne, Kishan (19), resident of Perne Kadambu, Sunil (19), a resident of Piligunda of Aryaapu village and Prakhyat (19), a resident of Balya of Barimaru village of Bantwal taluk.
Out of the five accused, the high court had already granted bail to Prajwal. Now the other four are also granted bail.
Lawyer Mahesh Kaje argued in favour of accused Kishan and Gurunandan, while Rajashekhar Ilyar argued for accused Sunil. Arun Shyam was the lawyer who represented accused Prakhyat. Prajwal, who was already granted bail in this case was defended in the court by lawyers Arun Shyam and Mahesh Kaje.
In the month of March the accused had taken the girl student in a car on the pretext of dropping her to her home and sexually harassed her in the same car at Bellippady Katara area. They had also filmed the whole act on mobile phone and threatened the girl student with dire consequences if she revealed the whole saga to anyone. The Puttur police had filed a chargesheet in the court after conducting preliminary investigation.
The video of the rape had gone viral on social media. A suo moto case was filed in the women's police station of Puttur. Later based on the complaint given by the victim girl student, the personnel of women's police station had arrested the five accused boys, students of the same college as that of the victim girl. In addition, the Puttur city police had arrested people for forwarding and sharing the video on social media. However, these 11 people were later released on bail. Later a separate chargesheet was filed in the Puttur court against these 11 accused.
The subordinate court had rejected the bail application of the five students accused of rape. However, now the high court has granted bail to all the five accused.
