Mangaluru, Dec 10: ACP North Sub division Srinivas Gowda inaugurated One-day international seminar on ‘Human trafficking - challenges and responses’ here at School of social work Roshni Nilaya on Tuesday, December 10.

The programme is organized by Bachelor of Social work department, centre for international partnership and in association with internal quality assurance cell (IQAC).

Addressing the gathering, ACP North Sub division Srinivas Gowda said, "Human trafficking occurs for the purpose of illegal human organ transplant, pornography, bonded labour, commercial sexual exploitation, begging, especially children, which is happening from ages. Now a different way has started through online sexual offences where a man will be operating from abroad and asks the victim to follow his instructions.

“Human trafficking is taking away one's freedom for the profit of others. Human trafficking is also associated with drug mafia and drug menace. In India total of 8,132 crimes pertaining to human trafficking were registered in the year 2016 of which only 2,400 were rescued. Conviction in the cases is only up to 28%.

"Recently I have raided a bar where seven were arrested and 14 ladies were rescued. One of the victim questioned me as to why did I raided the bar, as they give them salary and they send the same to their family and the police has destroyed her source of income. I was in a dilemma whether I did anything wrong. All this is happening because of lack of opportunities for the victims to get education, job and safe atmosphere to work, because of which they get into this by force or willingness.”

The session on Human trafficking history, magnitude and intervention by Mungreiphy Shimray, Professional response in addressing Human trafficking Emmanuel Angelo and prevention of human trafficking through field practicum Dr A J Christopher will be conducted in the one day seminar.

Principal of school of social work Roshni Nilaya Juleit C J, vice principal Dr Jenis Mary and student convener Joshlin P D’Souza were present.

Dean BSW department Prof Joselyn T Lobo welcomed the gathering and Mrinalini compered the programme.
