Mangalore, Sep 4: Of late, the city is transforming into a new hub for medical tourism. The fact that the number of patients coming to the city from far off places located within the country and abroad, seeking treatment for their ailments, by reposing trust on the skills of the doctors here, has been increasing over the years, stands testimony for this phenomenon.
Recently, a total shoulder replacement surgery was performed at Unity Hospital on a 49 year-old Nigerian patient named Benedict, an employee of Union Bank of Nigeria. He had suffered a complex fracture of the right shoulder two years back, following which he suffered from severe pain and restriction of right shoulder joint movements.
As part of Medical Tourism promoted by Unity Health Complex, an ISO 9001:2008 certified hospital, he travelled all the way form Nigeria to the city for treatment. He was operated upon by an orthopaedic team led by Dr B Sachidanand Rai, consultant orthopaedic joint replacement surgeon of the hospital. Dr Gopal Hegde, Dr Suresh Bhat, Dr Ismail and Dr Sanjay Shahri were also part of the team that successfully treated this patient.
