Bengaluru traffic cops pose as commuters, collect Rs 8 lac fines from guilty auto drivers

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SHP)

Bengaluru, Dec 5: Acting upon the numerous complaints, traffic police in Bengaluru earlier this week, went on a crackdown against auto rickshaw drivers who refused to ply on metered fares or those who denied rides in three out of the seven zones of the city. To nab the aberrant auto drivers in the act, police officials posed as commuters in prime junctions under specific zones and asked to be dropped at various locations in the city.

The official was successful in booking over 5,200 drivers across the city. The violations ranged from refusing to drive to a certain destination to demanding more fare coupled with having invalid or improper documents.

The number of auto drivers refusing rides was 797 in the East zone, 697 in the West zone and 81 in the North zone. Similarly, those demanding extra fares were 682 in the East, 604 in the West and 60 in the North zone. Over 212 autos from the East zone and 280 from West zone were seized by the police for having no or improper documents. In these three zones, additional around 2,000 auto drivers were fined for minor offences like not wearing a uniform and other violations. All these violations resulted in the traffic police collecting Rs 8,06,200 in fines.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) BR Ravikant Gowda stated since the crackdown proved successful, the officials plan to conduct similar drives in other zones of the city.

Narayan Swamy, president of Adarsh Auto Driver Union in Bengaluru said, “These drives are important. Because of some auto drivers who overcharge, the rest get a bad name and people prefer Uber or Ola cabs instead of autos. This results in less business for us.”

Very good act by police. This was required to be done long before. The autofare in Bangalore or even in Mangalore is much higher than in Mumbai. Yet they demand more.
Provide the contact number to report such incidents of refusing to ply and overcharging. These goon autodrivers do not spare ladies or senior citizens as well. They demand any amount and do not agree to ply even in heart of city. Their license needs to be suspended for such offenses.
Those sympethising with autodrivers are either they themselves of their relatives. No common man will sympethise with them.

Once in blue moon this kind of drive will never help. It has to be done through out the year. If police department does not have man power I will join in this drive and also take some retired people along with me. Salary is not required...only 20% of the fine collected is sufficient.

Similar operation need to be carried out in Mangalore as well. There are lot more auto driver's in every nuke corner of D.K who behave rudely and deny the ride even though they are free. Like to chit chat with fellow colleagues in the Rickshaw stand over a cup of tea and a Beedi. No sense of public service with most o the Auto Driver's in DK. How do you expect general public to behave with these driver's considering they too are human beings like us? This has really brought a bad name for D.K. for tourists. We have learn some manners and

Good job, but short lived. These Bangalore'auto wallah's are a big Mafia .. they are Rude, uncouth, and a law unto themselves. Majority of them are uneducated , considering themselves underprivileged and thrive on fleecing those who can "afford to take an auto" - their first reaction is to refuse to take you to your destination, if at all they agree, demands are unreasonable. Being a local, speaking Kannada, Tamil or Hindi I've been shortchanged several times, imagine New comers to the city. While there are a few exceptions, the majority of them are thugs. I'd be safe Ina Ola or Uber cab, even if it costs more. Further no humiliation at their loose tongues.
