Karkala, Sep 3: BJP taluk panchayat members Uday S Kotian and Shakuntala, were elected unanimously as the president and vice-president of the local taluk panchayat, respectively.
The post of the president was reserved for the general category and that of the vice-president, for the scheduled caste candidate. Kundapur subdivisional officer K N Ramesh, who officiated as the returning officer for the election held at the taluk panchayat auditorium here on Wednesday September 2, announced the above results.
Out of a total membership of 19 in the taluk panchayat, BJP has 11 members, while the Congress has the other eight seats with them. Kotian represents Edu constituency, and Shakuntala was elected from Kukkundoor. Kotian is an agriculturist besides being a contractor. He is presently the president of Miyyar Shakti Kendra. Since the last three months, he also was officiating as the in-charge president of the taluk panchayat after the expiry of the term of the previous incumbent, as he was the standing committee chairman of the taluk panchayat.
Former MLA V Sunil Kumar congratulated the victorious candidates and called upon the concerned to work without being influenced by political considerations, for the general welfare of the people. Opposition leader Manjunath Poojary promised unstinted support to the new team for developmental activities.
