Mangaluru, Dec 3: Srinivas Institute of Dental Sciences organised a Continuing Professional Development Programme (CODP) to update medical and dental professionals regarding behavioral modification techniques for tobacco cessation and management of nicotine withdrawal. The month of November is dedicated for awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder. Smoking tobacco is one of the main causes for COPD and tobacco happens to be the main cause of oral cancer, which is of interest to Dentists. There have been several efforts put forth to assist people in cessation of the habit. As a measure to step up the efforts towards tobacco cessation, Dental Council of India made it mandatory for the dental institutions to establish Tobacco Cessation Centres (TCC).
The programme was inaugurated by Dr A Srinivas Rao, pro-chancellor, Srinivas University and vice-president, A Shama Rao Foundation. Prof (Dr) Manoj Varma, Dean, Srinivas Institute of Dental Sciences and Dr Uday Kumar Rao, dean, Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre addressed the gathering.

1. Dr Sachin Sinha, associate professor at the department of Oral Pathology, Daswani Dental College Rajasthan
Topic: Tobacco Cessation Counseling and Management of Nicotine Withdrawal – Role of Dentists. He moderated activity that encouraged the participants to understand the aspects of tobacco use and its health, legal and social consequences. A quiz was conducted about tobacco and the winner was given a certificate. Demonstration of use of carbon monoxide monitor and counseling to quit tobacco use was performed by Dr Sinha.
2. Dr Manu Anand, senior resident, department of Psychiatry, Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre.
Topic: Motivational Enhancement Therapy for tobacco cessation.
Dr Sreevidya Bhat, HOD department of Public health dentistry welcomed the guests and Dr Kripal Rai, assistant professor, department of Public Health Dentistry delivered vote of thanks and convened the programme.
