Poverty-stricken Kerala mother hands 4 kids to child welfare

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 2 (IANS): The state capital hung its head in shame after the news broke out that a mother, unable to feed her six children, on Monday handed over four of them to the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare.

What's more sad and shocking is that the family lived just 1 km from the Secretariat, the seat of power.

The council decided to remove four children and leave the younger ones -- 4-month-old and 1.5-year-old with the mother, after neighbours of this hapless family, which was living in a makeshift tent, informed it of their condition.

Council officials said their condition was pitiable. They were told that the elder kid, aged seven, ate sand as they were unable to buy food, the official added.

"These four kids will be under our care and those going to school will continue that. They went to school to have food," said a Council official.

The mother said her husband was a daily labourer, but spent all his money on drinks and never gave any to meet the family needs.

After the news broke out, city Mayor K. Sreekumar visited the hapless family and promised the mother a temporary job in the Corporation from Monday.

It's unfortunate that no official of Kerala, which boasted the high standards, especially in the fields of social development, could locate this hapless family.

Producing more children when one can not feed them must be considered as crime. The poverty may be because of so many factors,,,,one of them is producing more children.

now a days even rich people also having either one or two children. it is very difficult to providing food, cloth, education etc. even for 2 children of the family. in such a case it is very very difficult for a poor family to maintain 4 or more children. so the need of hour is adopt family plan & 1 or 2 child is enough for a family. in this regard law should be implemented so that our economical condition may improve. but it is not so easy since vote bank politics wont allow this.

I am not against Modiji but being the PM he has do much more than simply expressing his view.
When Sanjay Gandhi was trying to bring some awareness or foresight on population growth opposition parties (may be Janata/janatadal) made hue and cry and blasted him for introducing forcible family planning. Let all the parties take unite decision and not to act on political grounds. Good for the country.

Other than this type of instances, I want to write here the reality of our country's poor citizens.

    1. One social worker, when asked why the woman who came to her did not bring her mother said, they had only one saree and at home they cover their body by paper and told the social worker, she would give the saree to her mother and send to the social worker next day. This is in Orissa.
    2. When I visited Assam, one nun there told me that they are helping tribal people in Tripura who do not have any clothes to wear and those tribals in mountain area wear tree leaves.
    3. Arunachal Pradesh is on the other side of Assam, and I am told that our govt is not doing anything to alleviate their poverty and they want China to take over that disputed state where they expect quick development as is in China. (This is their view and not mine).

Does he ever talk about India's exploding population growth and how that effects our economic achievement. He explodes all cooked up facts & figures.
What he has done on increasing rapes in the country. PM should act quickly to bring some ways to punish the rapists without mercy.
Beti padao bet bachao - only a slogan.

You say and i quote "Does he ever talk about India's exploding population growth and how that effects our economic achievement."

Dear Sir, You do not read newspapers properly. After getting elected as PM for the second time, The PM highlighted the need to control the population. It is in fact the opposition whose vote bank politics will not allow for a Law on population. There are cultures who beleive controlling population is against their religion, they will vehemently oppose such a Law. if somebody can pass a population Law in this country it will be Mr Modi .

The question raised by Roshan is :
Why have so many kids at the first place ? 2 should be good enough..

India is overburdened by ever exploding population growth thereby creating never ending problems.
Government should or must introduce family panning schemes. Just like China's policy. It is already too late but it is better late than never.

China already started revising their earlier One child policy...………….
Japan, Germany and many developed countries are encouraging to produce more children...……….
That earlier population control policy backfired and made imbalance...……..
The main problem is huge gap between Rich and poor...………..
Government should take care of poor, create employment, give unemployment allowances, provide basic needs to its citizens then no is required to eat sand.
As Government to collecting taxes from the wealthy they are responsible for feeding its poor citizens.
Why law makers are getting subsidized food, free electricity, tax free salary.... If Government can afford on this why can they afford on its poor citizens...…………….

Indian population will overtake China 's next year; with no. 105 in global hunger INDEX we will have lots of problems going ahead!
BTW, many couples are deciding not to produce children because of climatic change and the overall tough living conditions!!

    Dear Mr,
China wants more children now because it had implemented one child policy for a long time. The density of population is very less now. They have pulled out of poverty a large section of population in last three decades. In the case with Germany and some other countries the people in general dont have more than 2 kids. Take the examples of countries like Bangladesh, Pakithan India where historically the population is very high. They are very poor and backward without basic ameneties. So saying population is not a problem is very foolish. People who have little brains also extrapolate things. If you are doing that you will come to know that nearly 40% of Jobs will be lost in another two decades becasuse of technology and automation. if in this scenario you add population there will be more children who may have to eat mud. besides the resources will deplete fast, to down the mud through the throat there may not be a glass of water.

"The mother said her husband was a daily labourer, but spent all his money on drinks and never gave any to meet the family needs."
One side poverty, three kids and bread earner is daily labourer. over and above all head of the family is alcoholic. Poor class do not have any comforts in life, no recreation, friend circle and only way is to get attached to the partner and produce children. (factory). What the government can do. The couple lacks education to understand the problems of having big family, more than two children.
Blame the man who is not his senses. (somewhere, Cows have a shelter and well fed)

I agree with many of the things you say. However, one more issue i would like to say is, have a family you can sustain and not more than that. the labourer did not have resources to feed two children but he had six children!!!. Can you tell me why they did they not get the guarenteed provision?. why the elder child was eating mud and dirt?
