Udupi, Sept 1: Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shirva run by Salesians of Don Bosco organized a ‘Tie Breaker Football Tournament’ on Sunday August 30 to mark 150th year of the founding of their congregation. The tournament was inaugurated by Gladys Almeida, the newly elected zilla panchayat president and a native of Shirva.
The Salesians known for their youth work wanted to bring together the youth of Udupi taluk and provide them with wholesome entertainment and healthy interaction. A total of 40 teams from the various schools and junior colleges participated under junior and senior categories.
In a record time of four hours, 46 games were held. In the finals, two teams of St Mary’s Junior College clashed and emerged winners and runners-up, respectively. In the Junior category, St Francis English Medium High School Mudarangadi triumphed, while Don Bosco High School, Shirva had to be content with the runners-up trophy.
Fr Richard Coelho, parish priest, Shirva gave away the prizes. Present on the occasion were Fr Frederic Monteiro, Norbert Machado and Melwyn Aranha, who also distributed some of the special prizes. Fr Maxim D’Souza, rector spoke on the occasion highlighting the vision of Don Bosco and his service to youth. Fr Francis Silveira, the main organizer proposed the vote of thanks.
