Mangaluru: Lorry that killed teacher was trying to avoid hitting another auto

Mangaluru, Dec 2: The accident which happened at Kadri Kambla Road on Sunday and claimed the life of Shailaja Rao, a senior teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya at Panambur, happened when the driver of the lorry that was moving towards Circuit House through Kadri Kambla Road tried to avoid an auto rickshaw that was moving across the Kadri Kambla Junction, it has come light. In that process the lorry hit another auto rickshaw. 

While Shailaja Rao (55) with 22 years teaching experience in Kendriya Vidyalaya died in the accident, auto rickshaw driver, Vinod, from Kavoor Shantinagar, who suffered serious injuries, is being treated in a private hospital here. 

As the lorry was moving at considerable speed, after hitting the auto rickshaw, it dragged the three-wheeler for about 100 meters from the spot where the accident happened. The auto rickshaw driver was tossed on to the roadside in between, and therefore, his life was saved. The auto rickshaw was badly mangled in the accident which happened at 11.40 am. Shailaja, whose nature of injuries was critical, breathed her last in the hospital at around 2 pm. 

Shailaja, a teacher of primary section of the school, had served at the Kendirya Vidyalaya branch at Yekkur for a year in the past. She had bagged the regional incentive award for her activities which included scouts and guides where she functioned as Himalayan Wood Badge Captain, and her curricular and extracurricular activities. Her son is a doctor while daughter is a postgraduate degree holder. She lived in Panjimogaru and was going to market in an auto rickshaw when tragedy struck. 

The lorry in question was loaded with furniture items from Bengaluru. It had unloaded a part of the things in the city and was moving towards Udupi when this accident took place. The police claim that the lorry driver, Sddalingana Gowda from Bengaluru, was driving the lorry recklessly and at considerable speed, which caused the accident. He stands arrested.

A case about the accident was registered in traffic (east) police station.

    Found auto drivers never fallow stop n proceed or slow down. They drive like as if their vehicles have no breaks or they are driving the critical sick to the emergency. And that all others are expected to give way to them. Looks like truck driver did not expect its a four road junction as there are no indication at that junction. As it's a concrete straight looking road he must have been in speed and list control when auto entered road. Idrive on that road twice daily and defenetly fallow stop n proceed.

    Although I feel bad about the death, If driver is not at fault (Like brake fail), then he must not be punished. Why insurance companies are collecting money from every vehicle owners...???? Although they can not compensate the life but they can compensate the family of the deceased suitably at least financially.

    The MCC only waiting for a tragedy to happen. What is happening at Jyothi, Balmatta, Avery junction, Bendorewell and etc.

    the signals are not working, the signals are only for show piece. The sign boards are gone in the wind no one interested in replacing them.

    The elected representatives not intrested in any works. Still will in Mangalore will be dreaming of smart city. The rickshaw driver is at fault he cannot be stopping in the middle of the road, in the whole video the rickshaw is at the junction.

    What driving is this? This lorry driver needs harsh treatment by police. If he comes out public don't spare. His license must be cancelled.

    This junction is too danegerous , need a proper speed control and road widening has to happen, people are built safe compound wall ,the road is narrow ,no speed humps any of the road, why this is not able to notice by traffic police they come and stand and go , ridiculous deaprtment, bcos i have expirenced same thing with a two wheler one day, luckilly i was un hurt.
    pls widen this road ,trafic is full with expres buses and city jam,
    now one life is lost coming days many will loose,

    Again and again...… We South Kanarites must be impartial.

    Just because the rickshaw driver is local and truck driver is from outside South Kanara, we cant blame truck driver. He has exercised his "Right of Way"

    Report says, truck driver is speeding. may anyone say, at what speed he was going?
    May anyone knows what is the speed limit for truck in this road?
    No one knows.... !! but "pokkade" commenting on speed...

    Any accident, "blame the biggest vehicle involved", is normal but wrong trend...
    Because of this, rickshaw drivers never learn good driving habits

    This a 2 road junction and as per traffic rule, the vehicle which is already in the middle of the junction taking a turn should get right of way. So the first rickshaw was already in the middle of the turn to right side and the lorry driver had to slow down as he approached the junction. If we follow traffic rules and give priority to safety instead of speed, then many accidents can be avoided. There are rules, but majority dont follow, we ourselves have to change. There are people who go abroad and drive very safely following rules, but once they come to India they throw all rules outside and drive like maniacs.

    I agree with your comments with a small rider. As per the traffic guideline, the crossing roads can not be of same priority. One of them must be a bigger road. The white mark or hump indicates the smaller road. If such signages are not there, then traffic authorities too are responsible for this accident.

    With my experience, most of the rickshaw drivers in Indian cities are driving without respecting traffic rules (Of course not all, but most of them)

    This is one of the busiest & most dangerous intersections in Mangalore. Earlier there was a traffic island at this junction but has since disappeared for some strange reason. There was also a traffic cop manning this junction but he too has disappeared. I wonder whether the concerned authorities will ever wake up even after precious lives are lost!

    The driver should be charged and tried for manslaughter. Reckless lorry drivers and bus drivers will not change their behaviour until they are punished severely for accidents in which people are killed.

    Was watching the video, as per the traffic rules the other auto driver who had stopped in middle of road is at fault as the through traffic has right of way & who is turning has to check there is no oncoming traffic is present before he turns & can't stop in middle of the road

    After hitting the rickshaw, why he did not apply brake. The lorry was moving ahead without any control. May be the driver became panic due to the impact and momentarily became spell bound !
    No doubt that the driver was driving recklessly.

    No Point in commentating and tying how many life's have gone due to the accident in Mangalore but any action have been taken or any driver punished or family given compensation. I know no point in giving compensation when a precious life is loss as no amount can bring that person back.

    There should be a speed breaker in this junction especially the road coming downhill. The rickshaw was already crossing the junction, the lorry driver should have slowed down when he saw the junction. I am not generalizing but I have seen many Bangalore registered vehicles drive very rashly whenever they are in smaller cities and towns. They think they have driven in Bangalore and are expert drivers.

    I had a same encounter with Bangalore registered youngster near Valencia.
    I stopped him and gave a peace of my mind.
    his reason for speeding was "people are waiting for me at home".
    we all have people waiting at home that doesn't mean you can just run over someone.

    That means the rickshaw was moving across the road. can anyone with traffic rules, please advise, whether the rickshaw which crosses the road to be more cautious or the truck going in the straight road.. ?

    Of course, teachers death is very sad... but responsibility of the death is to be fixed with the rickshaw driver, not the truck driver.

    No justification will work.

    If the truck driver ( I suspected he must be an outsider) was driving even at a speed of 60km, he could have applied brakes and controlled the vehicle and this must damage and loss of life would not have occurred.

    He must be given severe punishment and the traffic police has to immediately put at least road barrier on the down end of both side of kambla road to prevent this kind of accidents.

    Our traffic policemen are slow and the system is not bothered.

    This accident has taken place yesterday noon and till now no remedial measure of at least placing barricade is not done by the police and there is one gentleman who always praises the police in this forum for no reason.

    From whatever I can make out from the video, the truck was indeed moving at considerable speed.

    Due to the recklessness of the driver, a life has been lost and the rickshaw driver is battling for his life.

    We need to put an end to such reckless driving. Everyday I come across several vehicles speeding even in residential areas with children playing and people take a stroll. It is high time we did something about this.

    It appears that the lorry was in very high speed, though he was approaching a junction where vehicles cross his path. The auto he avoided was already in-between the junction, hence its the lorry driver's duty to stop, not continue speeding and trespass into the other lane, where, he can't clearly see if onward traffic is obstructing his trespassing.

    This basic rule must be explained to drivers in Mangaluru. They enter the junction without considering whose right of way/priority is at which place. Unless they understand this, we will continue losing lives.

    The accident took place because he tried to avoid another auto is a lame excuse. He should be punished for killing a human being.

    Since there is no signal lights in circles of Mangalore,. First cause is this .secondly there is no speed breaker in circles. I saw in Goa, every circles speed breaker . But till this service busses are running inside the city, our MCC and Traffic department won't install.
